Choose an everyday object, nothing too big, and spend the day with it (it could be a spoon, sellotape, an apple, a paper clip etc etc ).Carry it around with you, have it on your desk while you work - talk to it maybe
Then spend 10 minutes free writing around the object, don't self edit, don't cross anything out, just keep that pen moving. If you get stuck, just write the name of the object over and over until something else comes out. Look back over your writing, and use what you've written to create a poem.The object I chose was a cheese grater and this is what I produced (please remember these are years old).
Cheese grater
Squat and square
the funnel of a sinking ship
nosing its way through the arctic whiteness of Fairy.
Thick bubbles disguising
it's functional rectangularity
and steel singularity
of purpose.
Cheese grater II
Icily silver
it surgically shaved slivers of cheese
into its body.
Older, wiser, crocodile-skinned
it lies in wait to bite my fingers
under the water
