Here's one I did some years ago.
Choose an everyday object, nothing too big, and spend the day with it (it could be a spoon, sellotape, an apple, a paper clip etc etc ).Carry it around with you, have it on your desk while you work - talk to it maybe Then spend 10 minutes free writing around the object, don't self edit, don't cross anything out, just keep that pen moving. If you get stuck, just write the name of the object over and over until something else comes out. Look back over your writing, and use what you've written to create a poem.
The object I chose was a cheese grater and this is what I produced (please remember these are years old).
Cheese grater
Squat and square
the funnel of a sinking ship
nosing its way through the arctic whiteness of Fairy.
Thick bubbles disguising
it's functional rectangularity
and steel singularity
of purpose.
Cheese grater II
Icily silver
it surgically shaved slivers of cheese
into its body.
Older, wiser, crocodile-skinned
it lies in wait to bite my fingers
under the water
have fun
Sharra

Exercise - an everyday object.

Thanks Sharra.
Not 10 mins, just 2 on this one, to try to write more instinctively, without edit.
Unwashed, and catching submission,
it sits holding my three corpses.
Ashes to ashes,
butt to butt.

Are you saying you spent the day walking around with a cheesegrater talking to it? The length people go to for their art amazes meSharra wrote:Carry it around with you, have it on your desk while you work - talk to it maybe

There's nothing odd in that!BenJohnson wrote:Are you saying you spent the day walking around with a cheesegrater talking to it? The length people go to for their art amazes meSharra wrote:Carry it around with you, have it on your desk while you work - talk to it maybe
I've been carrying a clockwork gramophone around with me for years. You never know when you might need it.

Ah, this thread could be fun, some good examples Sharra.
Here is one straight off the cuff, probably shows lol.
Kitchen sink
Stainless-steel formed trough
shone when new, gurgling
fluids down a pristine throat
now choked with nodules of fat.
Potato peelings stole its sheen
abrasively denied a white ceiling
of its vanity, yellowed by steam
spoils of airborne corn, olive oils.
A slimy beige bowl now scuffs
mimics curves, lacking in stature
turned on its back to be drained
soothed by drips from a leaky tap.
Broken chain, rattles day to day
over each vortex of spinning earth
washed from overgrown roots.
The open drain cannot be plugged.

to anticipate touching what is unseen seems far more interesting than seeing what the hand can not touch

ok I have carried it around with me, talked with it! Oh you know the usual thing..
You're self-importance
sits squarely on a desk
filling my life each day.
I want time of my own,
full of oportunity.
Unorganised bliss.
Stop winking, waiting
patiently. I'm dependent,
reluctant to submit.
Yet each day I lose
to full sheets of order,
dream of a shredder
with child-like glee.

I liked this Mesmie - is it a laptop/organiser? And did it appreciate being talked to?
I especially liked dream of a shredder / with child-like glee.

Code: Select all
I carried you about all day
so I could learn your pig tail
curves.
Folded
you slipped like a silverfish
into my back pocket.
You weigh
so little
with only one trick up
the sleeves you don't
have.
After
work when I sit down
you remind me of your
presence
and my
desire for a glass
of wine.
