Habibi

“Everywhere is war.”
Bob Marley

I journeyed to our mosque at Eid al-Fitr –
to make my leap, to greet the angels there –
as we went into Iraq and Afghanistan.
This was a time I’d crossed the centuries
to Rumi, with his love for what he saw.
“Close both eyes to see with the other eye” –
I did so, spinning lightly in God’s wind.
Rumi’s drunken sentences filled me like water,
in my stocking feet, with my arms freshly washed.

The generations flicker. To the East,
the sun heaves up, and thus the day begins.
The minister, the dervish, and the priest
dance in the wind that leavens all our sins.

This world is a big place and if your work
is all of it, then you have work to do.
So, step into the swimming pool. Don’t shirk.
The job will not be done if not by you.

Each person that you meet will have their quirk
and baggage you might handle. If a few
slip through your grasp, go back. Don’t be a jerk.
All life on Earth is precious as the dew.

I like the poem, John, but I'm too tired to critique it.
Signature info:
If you don't like the black theme, it is easy to switch to a lighter color. Just ask me how.
If I don't critique your poem, it is probably because I don't understand it.

No problem, Caleb! it is something like four in the morning your time. :)

Cheers,
John

Some nice sonics John. Liked heaves/dervish/leavens and quirk/jerk was a smile. Enjoyed the Rumi quote too. The notion of a wind that leavens sin was resonant.

Hi Phil,

I'm glad you enjoyed the sonics! I had fun with those. Heaves-leavens was a fun contrast.

I got told on the nasty poets website that the Rumi line was trite, until I remarked that it was in quotes because it's not mine, it's Rumi's. I was then taken to task for my "skin-deep knowledge of Islam," which would be news to my in-laws. I prefer the nice poets website.

Cheers,
John
