The Apostle

“It’s free, but it ain’t cheap,” Robert Duvall
says of salvation, in the little church
he builds after he kills a man. And yes,
we pay all that we have and that we are –
in snot and tears, in trembling and defeat.

How easy it would be if I could choose
when faith would grace me like a wedding ring!
But I no longer feel it, and my eyes
are blind to what is written in the grass
behind my house, where faith is no big thing.

Ah! Well, in the grass would be the proof of God in nature. Elsewhere, I say that plants don't need faith.

The idea of my eyes are blind is that they are blind to this, but not to other things. Does that come through at all?

Cheers,
John

Ah! Well, that is true. But choose-eyes-grass off-rhyme, and I value that. I shall have to ponder!

Cheers,
John
