Here is a self made man who changed my tires from the little business behind his home. I played with the color a bit--tried to make him appear colourized, like old film.

Self mad-man

Here is a self-mad man
tyres for chairs
flag for a wife
an open safe
encouraging honesty.
Tash and badge; reminders
of who he is.
Turtle tank, slung holly;
reminders of who he wasn't.
After a long short day
he retires to the top -
tired - relieves himself,
his own little shit hole.
He once changed my tyres
in celluloid, I feared him
like Eraserhead, monolithic
hair shocked towards the
stars, driving away, beautifully
balanced, I loved him like a dad.

Please forgive me if this seems an abhorrent depiction of your photo.

I based it on the feelings of Kurdt Cobain, or those in the biography "Heavier than Heaven"

An approach!

It was not 'abhorrent'--it was an interesting piece and lets just hope my mechanic doesn't secretly peruse poetry websites:)
Just an off the wall comment on the spelling of tyres...we spell it tires. Tyres reminds me of that ancient city.
monolithic
hair shocked towards the
stars,
Liked that very much. Mechanic meets 'Flock of Seagulls'. Not sure what you meant by the last line. But some things culturally are missed by me here. Such as Eraserhead, tash and badge, turtle tank and slung holly. Nevertheless a fitting description of a small corner of a man's life was felt all the way through the poem.

Cheers,
Kimberly

Jolly good. Yes I hope he doesn't trawl poetry forums!

NB:

Eraserhead - the film

Tash - his homely moustache

Badge - I just found it comical that for a small business he has his name emblazoned on his shirt, like the hoards of employees might forget who he is, or even he might forget!

Turtle tank - obscure I agree, basically the tank in the background of the photo, probably not a turtle tank at all!

Slung Holly - the old christmas holly that he forgot to take down, again presumptuous, could well have been Christmas!

Anyhow, all praise the small business man.
