To Heal Is Not a Day’s Work

What’s washed up on the beach, now that the storm
has spent its fury and the skies are clear?
Here are some fragments of an ordered life,
loosed by the sea’s embrace, but none of them
complete or usable, nor would a man
mistake them for undamaged goods. I have
been sifting through the coral, and the years
where what I wrote was manic. I do not
find this an easy process, though the salt
is off my limbs now, and the air is sweet.

Well, this is splendid, John. Members of the Coo-mmunity can't think of much to suggest at the moment, but we'll return if we do. The imagery is excellent and we wonder whether 'archives' might find a place in the sea theme (^v^)

Thank you, F & W.-B.!

The sea theme?

Cheers,
John

Here is the flotsam of a jigsaw life,

Enjoyed John. Great title. I thought I'd offer some options for critique, though your preference is for passive verbs and a quieter register and that approach is fine. I'm not fundamentalist about aesthetics 🤣

Thanks, Phil - glad you like the title! I like your version, but then I like my version too! the flotsam of a jigsaw life is nice, and it's funny flotsam never made it into the poem, it's a word I like. :)

Cheers,
John

Hi FLiss and Coo,

Apologies for my abrupt message - it was the wee small hours, when I can't really type! But yes, is there a journal with a sea theme? I'm not sure what your final comment meant ...

Yes, it is a nice word John, though no doubt a default for many a briny yarn⛵🤣

Ah! I have a joke about that. But it'll have to wait till we eventually meet. It's about an old salt. :)

Cheers,
John

Greetings, John, and apologies for not making much sense yesterday evening! What we meant was, could the line about looking through the archives use some sea imagery, maybe? N might be searching a shipwreck or something; that's probably not a good suggestion (we're very tired again), but hopefully it's clear (^v^)

Thank you, FLiss and Coo - i had totally missed your point! I could replace the word archvies with flotsam, and that might work, but I think I like the specificity of archives there and there is after all plenty of sea theme throughout. I'll have a ponder!
