Task

What you must understand is that the task
was simply not achievable. It’s not
through lack of trying. I spent many years
climbing that hill or bringing in that harvest,
come rain or come shine. This had no effect
that I could see. I might as well have thrown
my grain into the ocean or set down
my climbing tools and watched the clouds. They are
not without beauty. Could it be that they
would better serve my purpose? Could it be
that all my labor was in vain, that I
have wasted these years fruitlessly? Perhaps
activity distracts and what is urgent
is not important after all. Perhaps
the key we seek is in the clouds that fleck
the blue sky, in drift and repose instead.

Hi John

When I think of a 'task' title, Cowper or Mr Dick come to mind, their tasks no doubt a distraction of sorts. Distraction is a positive outcome in some ways, especially if the introspection is damaging!

Thank you, Phil! I agree with you about distraction, an important tool in the day's toolkit when vicissitude occurs! I'd forgotten the Cowper, but I think mostly i was wanting the N to have failed in the goals they had set themselves. It's one of those poems.

Cheers,
John
