Fearless

They have a clock with birds on it, and each
passing hour, a new bird sings. I had
a student who was blind, and thought to get
this timepiece for her, years ago. Her folks
once kidnapped her. It wasn’t hard, the car
just kept on driving. They were not amused
at her news she was gay. I helped her move
house once with her companion. I recall
her poetry recital – when she strode
from her desk into space, declaimed by heart
what she had chosen, and marched to her seat
unguided, fearless. I can see her yet.

So you are revisiting a shop John, which still has the same clock for sale? It would have been a wonderful present. I wondered why you didn't make the purchase? An uplifting narrative note, that contrast between her blindness and clarity of who she was with the determination to proclaim that fact. Poetry with purpose.

Thanks, Phil! yes, it would have made a great present, but it seemed a bit intrusive to purchase a somewhat large gift for a student at random, regardless of my intentions. THis was a straight-A student by the way.

As you say, poetry with a purpose!

Cheers,
John

They were not amused
at her news she was gay.

If they were moved enough to kidnap her then "not amused" seems rather an understatement. Enjoyed the tale.
I'm out of faith and in my cups
I contemplate such bitter stuff.

Greetings John,

Now, a clock with birds, how pleasant! This is a very interesting poem. The kidnapping episode is rather shocking; we wonder how it panned out. We're glad you were able to help and to recall the student's fearlessness. Nothing to suggest at this stage, but if we think of anything we'll return (^v^)

Cheerie,
F & (^v^)

Thank you, Ray and Fliss and Coo!

Yes, she identified the kidnapping attempt and was able to get back to school. It was rather shocking. But she was fearless.

Cheers,
John
