Rupert Brooke - The Great lover

Anyone? Hello I hope you don't mind us contacting you but we wanted to draw your attention to an event which we are holding in Glasgow on 5th February. Award winning novelist, Jill Dawson will be talking about her book The Great Lover. It is a fictional tale based on Rupert Brooke's time in Grantche...

Season's Greetings

This was sprayed onto the wall of a building society in Norwich and seems like a great message in these dark days. Season's greetings to you all from Nicki and myself. Thanks to everyone who helps to make this forum such a constructive place - especially the mods. I know I'm not about much these day...

Adrian Mitchell: much missed by me!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2008/dec/21/adrian-mitchell-obituary He was playful and satirical and inventive. For Beauty Douglas is up there with Whitsun Weddings and Crow IMO. And, of course, he also came up with the immortal words: 'Most people ignore most poetry because most poetry ignores mos...

Re: Cow Tower by Night

I did try experimenting with ISO earlier in the week but I think it was too dark. One annoying thing is that every time you alter the mode dial the ISO reverts back to auto which I wasn't aware was happening - so some of them may have been taken on normal ISO. Anyway, it was raining at the time and ...

Re: Cow Tower Norwich

I think I'm right in saying that the tower was a 14th century gunnery built to defend a crucial part of the River Wensum. The top of the tower was (according to legend) blown off by cannon during Robert Kett's peasant revolt of 1549. Kett was later captured and chained to the walls of Norwich castle...

I went out last night with my tripod! There are a few more night shots of Norwich here:

Re: Longing for the green....

The sky is very mean and moody; nice one Kim. Have you thought about cropping the green section? When i was taking photos in the fens - where the skies are similarly overpowering - I found that a thin sliver of ground helped to emphasise the weight of the sky. Just a thought.

Re: Cow Tower Norwich

Thanks for the kind comments guys. I find the River Wensum endlessly fascinating. In fact, this stretch is where all of my haiku were composed:

Photography, for me, seems like a natural extension of writing haiku.

Re: Red barn in fall

Thanks Marten; I have a monopod on my xmas list. Moving river water is on my list to try. However, most of the rivers in Norfolk move too slowly to make this interesting. Some of the mill pools might work though! ISO sounds a bit too technical for me at this stage - but it's useful to have an explan...

Re: Lake Camelot

Indeed.

Willows whiten, aspens quiver,
Little breezes dusk and shiver
Thro' the wave that runs for ever
By the island in the river
Flowing down to Camelot.
Four gray walls, and four gray towers,
Overlook a space of flowers,
And the silent isle embowers
The Lady Of Shalott.

Re: Red barn in fall

Thanks Marten - that's helpful. I actually bought a Nikon D40 about six months ago to do my Lit Norfolk photographs. Initially I did everything on auto but now I'm starting to experiment with some of the other options. I've recently discovered the aperture mode where I set the f stop and the camera ...

Re: Red barn in fall

I think this is pretty damn fine. The colour of the barn, the framing effect from the tree and the autumnal colours make it a winner. If I had to constructively criticise it I'd say that there was 1 leaf too many in front of the barn (lol). Do you set shutter speed and aperture manually or do you us...

Flickr Photo Sharing

Don't know if any of you guys have come across Flickr (?) - but I just thought I'd flag it up. It's a wonderful site for.....yes, sharing photos. I signed up about 6 months ago in order to have somewhere to post my Lit Norfolk pics and have become a bit obsessed with it ever since. The basic account...

Re: Name These Poets??

Well done Kris - the little guy is Douglas Dunn - who worked in the Hull Uni library with Larkin. The one on the left is Richard Murphy - a pretty decent Irish poet (don't know what happened to him). It was a Faber and Faber photo-shoot. I don't know the location but presumably in and around Hull so...

Name These Poets??

Two are fairly straight forward but the 'other' two will be a challenge. I've always loved this picture because it contains 3 of my heroes together. All it needs is 'Famous Seamus' and JB to be a complete set.

I opened my local paper this morning and this guy is coming to Norwich next week to perform his musical versions of Lorca's poems: http://www.keith-james.com/ See also: http://www.poemsofgarcialorca.com/ It's spooky because Keith James and (bassist) Rick Foot also do a show entitled: 'The Songs of N...

I visited Skellig Michael in 1991. We had an horrendous jouney out to the island in a force 6 gale with half the passengers throwing up and the other half crossing themselves and saying prayers. It is a truly spectacular place though and definitely worth the trip on the vomit comet to get there. Tom...

For many months now my Federico Garcia Lorca page has been receiving a huge number of hits. I couldn't work out why a Spanish poet's grave should be of any interest to the world at large; but now I know:

Normal for Norfolk

As some of you may know I've been busy 'preserving for posterior' the literary heritage of Norfolk. (Yes, we do have some.) To make the site more 'sticky' I've resorted to my normal trick of setting up a forum. However, the Norfolk Forum (unlike the PG forum) is proving as intractable as a tractor i...
